Are there Sustainable Urban Tree Species?

This news article highlights latest research that shows that two-thirds of urban tree species will be at risk by 2050. Do we need to start looking for resilient trees? Does that mean introducing more non-native species or will that put our native wildlife at risk?
When visiting San Fransisco in August, I noticed how all the Platanus x hispanica (Plane trees) were suffering, but the Olea europaea were in good health. Sadly, San Fransisco has been in drought for 2 years and this is possibly the result?
