"Building Bridges',development at Bath South Quays

The historic, industrial area of Bath fell into disrepair over the last few decades. Beautiful riverside warehouses and factories, sited along the valley floor, have been the subject of change and repurpose for about 100 years. The river side is rich in design, form and materials and is interesting because the buildings form the side of the river in many places. The redevelopment has been in consultation since 2016 and work finally started in 2018 and still continues. This week saw the erection of the 60m cycle/footbridge linking the revitalised South Quays to the centre of Bath, diverting pedestrians and cyclists off the main Bath to Bristol road, it was shipped in 2 parts from Belgium and assembled on site with minimal tolerance for adjustment. The main design values are:

"To create a modern development that builds on the unique historic industrial character of the site"

"To use a selection of materials that reflect and enhance the industrial setting"

"Make a lasting contribution to the public realm of Bath"

"Buildings of fitting architectural quality when viewed from near and far"

The multidisciplinary development team have had to factor in the Hot Thermal Springs of Bath, listed buildings and otters, among other things! The development is scheduled for completion in Spring 2021
