Concrete - the good, the bad and the ugly...

  • The International Energy Agency estimates that for every kilogram of cement produced, around the same amount of Carbon Dioxide is released into the atmosphere.

  • About 5-7% of global gas emissions are produced by cement manufacturers

  • 90 million tonnes of concrete is used every year in the UK

However...on a positive note...

  • Scientists have discovered that concrete can absorb sulfur dioxide (air pollutant)!

  • Scientists are mirroring coral reefs (Biomimicry!) and capturing carbon dioxide and combining it with calcium hydroxide to create limestone

  • The Palazzo Italia, Milan, has been enveloped in Biodynamic concrete panels to reduce smog levels
