Julie Bargmann

As I continue to examine and consider what sort of Landscape Architect and Designer I am, or want to be, I've been looking at prominent female Landscape Architects.

Julie Bargmann focuses on contaminated and post-industrial sites, she works towards reconnecting communities with local toxic land that is regenerated and repurposed for everyones' benefit. She is currently Professor of Landscape Architecture at University of Virginia. Bargmann wrote a paper high-lighting how ethnic minorities and low-income communities frequently live near to contaminated and toxic land. Her Studio, called DIRT (Dump it Right There) is a research practise that describes itself as having "fascination with site histories, concern for marginalized communities and an obsession with urban regeneration". https://www.dirtstudio.com/schtick

I was really struck by the way she describes herself as designer-artist and political animal, that's the type of designer I would like to be..

Urban Outfitters Headquartes; U.S Navy Yard, Philadelphia; DIRT studio
