Winter Beauty

Annie Watson

There's always a dilemma about autumn/winter maintenance of perennials. In terms of wildlife, it's better to leave them and cut them back in spring as the temperature rises. This protects insects taking refuge in the stems, under leaves etc and the seedbeds often provide a food source. They also look incredibly beautiful frosted with ice on a bright, sunny winter's day.
